ABOUT US
“This isn’t new to us; we have been doing it since 1988! What is new is the number of adverse events we are being challenged with”
We are a charitable trust originally registered in 1998 as the Adverse Events Trust. In 2017 we broadened our objectives to enable us to provide relief to all farmers, farming families, and rural communities who have been subjected to suffering or loss as a consequence of adverse events.
We registered the new objectives as the Farmers Adverse Events Trust to better reflect what we do and those we assist.
to WHAT IS AN ADVERSE EVENT? – INFORMATION HUB
Adverse events are natural disasters that cause great disruption and damage. Adverse events can be events lasting short periods of time OR spanning over several years such as long-standing droughts and pandemics.
Click on the icons to learn more about each adverse event and see what information and advice is available to help you prepare and get through.
It’s impossible to know what is coming and when, but what we can do is prepare, plan ahead and be ready. Being ready enables more cost-effective and efficient responses.
What We Do
Reduction and Readiness
The Farmers Adverse Events Trust helps farmers and rural communities plan by providing knowledge and advice, alongside developing practical tools and programs to deliver greater on-farm resilience and preparedness.
Response and Recovery
We support local farmers and rural communities nationwide to know what to do and how to get through, during and after, a major adverse event to help reduce the impact on our people, animals, infrastructure, and the wider economy. This can occur in a number of ways such as partnering with other organisations; supporting recovery coordination; financial assistance; and circulation of relevant and accurate information.
Our Objectives
To provide relief and assistance to farmers and farming families who have been subjected to suffering or loss as a consequence of adverse natural events, including suffering arising from events creating extraordinary economic conditions; and suffering or loss arising as a result of biosecurity emergencies declared under section 144 of the Biosecurity Act 1993.
To provide for the general welfare of farmers, farming families and rural communities who have been subjected to suffering or loss as a consequence of adverse natural events.
To develop response and recovery capability to empower and enable the provision of relief and assistance as and when adverse events occur.
Working in Partnership
The Farmers Adverse Event Trust works to develop partnerships with like-minded organisations. We recognise partnerships are some of our most important assets.
The relationships we have built and maintained, some spanning decades, allows us to extend our reach. Together we share our knowledge, skills, and resources as well as create opportunities to achieve our aim to provide relief and assistance.
“It’s about working smarter not harder”
Working in partnership enables rural-focused response and recovery actions during and following an adverse event, it also means New Zealand Farmers and rural communities get support and help from local people who live and work in the same area.
We’re always looking to partner with like-minded organisations. We recognise that each of us will have different skills, capacity, capability before, during and after events and cannot do it alone.
If you want only the best for our rural communities and agree that together we are stronger, then get in touch. We are supportive of initiatives that increase resilience and believe we all have something to offer.
